Folgefonna Nasjonalpark

About Ton van Geelen

In the summer of 2024 Ton made a trip to Folgefonna Nasjonalpark, Norway. Folgefonna, the third largest glacier on mainland Norway, is the heart of the national park. Here are glacier tongues and icefalls, wild valleys, and raging rivers of rushing meltwater and scenic summer pastures.

Stig Tronvold

In 1999 he drove from Kristiansand to Bergen, via Odda and by the Hardangerfjord. So he passed by Folgefonna Nasjonalpark for the first time.

In his artistic autobiography (published in 2010) he wrote: “In January 2000 I visit my newborn cousin in Bergen. On a rainy day I went into a bookstore. I saw a wonderful reference book of a Norwegian nature photographer. His book inspired me in an artistic way… “
Stig Tronvold is the ‘house photographer’ of Folgefonna, named best Nordic photographer of the year in 1997. And even after 2010 his photographs have had a great influence on his artistic work.”

“In 2024 it has been 25 years since I met Folgefonna for the first time. I had the desire to ride a part of that route again, all the way to Odda.
I saw the pictures in that reference book, but I wanted to admire the Folgefonna National Park with my own eyes. I am going to take several hikes, take photographs for new artistic inspiration. And I’m going to meet Stig Tronvold.”

His journey became a indescribably beautiful adventure. Where he trained so hard to get his condition right, he had not the idea to reached some specific goals. And with Stig he made a special hike to Raunsdalen/ Kvitnadalen.
“But I did it !!! I have seen spots, a lot of hikers or tourists don’t see… because of the difference in altitude or because of the length of the hike ‘in the middle of nowhere’.“

In this album an impression of several spots in Folgefonna Nasjonalpark.
