Photography is an important part in Ton van Geelen’s artistic life. Impressions of his travels, walks in the countryside and cities, people from other cultures, events etc. serve as inspiration for his creations.
Ton paints his creations in many layers, so the photos will serve as a framework and example. By frequently studying and quiet viewing of the photos, the fermentation process in his head starts, until it comes in the right mood.

This chapter is about a selection of garden-paintings which I painted on commission, are being sold or tested.

Ton van Geelen has an opinion of women:
"Women have two sides; a beautiful, warm, and sensual side, and an elusive and mysterious side." That makes them cool in his eyes.

'Erotism'

Because of this view of the women, he can not understand them. But the attraction, the beautiful sensuality, a feminine detail 'evokes an image in which beauty defeats the erotism'.
In his current figurative style of painting Ton does not show everything. It's the attitude. Some forms are faded, others are strengthened. Color applications play a major role in this.

'In 1993 Ton was in Grindelwald (Switzerland) at the invitation of the owner of Hotel Alpenblick, to hold an exhibition of his own work.

On the Thursday it began to snow heavily. I woke up early the next day. It was beautiful outside. A thick pack of snow, everything white and a clear blue sky, not even a person on the street. I dressed quickly and went for a walk. After an hour up the hill, I turned around.I stood in a beautiful spot among the snow-covered trees and had a view of all the mountains, the valley and the village. The Wetterhorn, Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau ... even the Schreckhorn and the Finsteraarhorn were visible. In the distance I heard a radio boomed ... "What a cool happening it would be to put a DJ here and let’s party ..." 

But yes, threatening avalanche danger and freezing cold ... Impossible. ‘

Inspiration of Dance

At that particular moment in March 1993, Inspiration of Dance was born. After a lengthy fermentation process, an invitation from ID&T and the meeting with DJ Johan Gielen in 2000, I was able to make the right artistic translation and work out the idea. 'Inspiration of Dance’ is a collection of paintings that revolves all facets of the dance scene. And it is still going on.

The game of colorful lights, smoke and dance, the atmosphere of the discos inspired Ton in his youth, when he was going out and danced on several dancefloors in the area. The atmosphere and music have fascinated him greatly.  He had ideas and feelings about it, but he couldn’t translate it on canvas…

One evening in 1999 he made photos of a performance of a friend DJ Bobby V. and from those pictures he painted in bright acrylic colors and playful shapes the atmosphere in a painting. The poses of the dj changed by natural in abstract forms. His response were the motivation to make more artistic creations of the professional dancescene.

Johan Gielen

A year later he met Johan Gielen at Mysteryland Bussloo. It was the beginning of a new artistic way of making artworks. Following Dutch DJ's, making pictures of them backstage and their perfomances, and later the translation on canvas. Everyone, included ID&T, were impressed by his work and a lot of invitations to make photos and artworks followed. Several years he was at events like Mysterland, Trance Energy, Impulz, Crazyland, Pleasure Island and more.
In 2003 he had a Dutch scoop with 'The DJ Johan Gielen Art Collection' and it was broadcasted by MTV-television.

And even now in 2018 he follows Dutch DJ's at smaller events. In particular a friend, a local DJ. He was there at the evening I met Johan Gielen at Mysteryland Bussloo.

Ton likes to travel and visits different European cities regularly. Sculptures, modern architecture, old buildings and ruins fascinate him. 

Impression

The impression, the atmosphere, the location of the city, but also the culture and colors of the buildings, interspersed with squares and parks, he wants to absorb it all. He captures the overall atmosphere with his camera, which later serves as a framework for his paintings. In this Ton tries to give the total impression in a cityscape.
